4:15 am for coffee and cake?
4:15 am for coffee and cake? Waking up at an hour like this has got to be for something worth it. It sure was worth it, the whole group hiked 300 meters up to the top of Masada in the dark to the summit. Why did we do this at such an odd hour? The hour-plus ascent rewarded us with a spectacular sunrise overlooking the Dead Sea and the stunning dunes and plateaus of the Judean desert. It was a spectacular and once in a lifetime experience and made waking up at such an outrageous hour well worth it.
After we took in the beauty of the sunrise, we learned about the history of Masada and what its purpose was around the time of the destruction of the second temple. After a walk through through of several of Masada's rooms and discussion of parts of its architecture, we all descended Masada weary and hungry, We ate a delicious breakfast at the Masada Guest House and then made our way to the Dead Sea.
Upon entering the area where the Dead Sea is, the smell of salt immediately permeated the air. Most of the group entered the sea right away, while the other half stood debating whether or not the sting was worth it.
Once we all knew we could literally float in shallow water, most of us decided to go in! (And yes, the rumors are true - the water stings!)
Of course, a trip to the Dead Sea would not be complete without slathering mud all over our bodies. Who knew you actually had to pay for mud?
We let the mud dry for about 15 minutes, and took a second dip in the sea to wash ourselves clean. Immediately, we could feel how soft and smooth our skin became.
We hopped back on the bus and headed to Jerusalem -- our last major bus ride of the trip. Once we reached Jerusalem, we were dropped off at Machne Yehuda where we were free to explore the street vendors and eat lunch. We really enjoyed seeing all the exotic fruits, spices, and pastries. We especially loved the chocolate rugalach from Marzipan.
So here we are. Back at Caesar Hotel, lounging on the pool deck and relaxing before one of our last nights on birthright! We are excited to see a comedy show tonight, yet so sad this trip is coming to a near end.
