One of the best and most rewarding experiences so far on my trip are the conversations. And I don't mean the "getting to know you" topics about jobs, school, and such, although those are fantastic too. I mean the deep, philosophical, theological, personal, intense conversations. We are an articulate and diverse group that is struggling to synthesize our beliefs and express them meaningfully.

I have come to realize this is why I came here. The sights are beautiful and learning about Israel is essential to the trip, but the deep personal connections I have started to form are the best thing to happen to my philosophically-starved mind in a long time. Our group discussions have provided a spark that compels me to continue conversations with various individuals as I figure out how to articulate what I think. My mind is invigorated beyond belief. I cannot shut it off, even to sleep. But sleep really is over-rated.

With the help of my peers and this inclusive environment, I am opening up to difficult discussions I would normally avoid. I am regaining fulfillment as an intellectual human being. I am absorbing pieces of what many others have offered and am filling in the cracks in my beliefs. This aspect of our trip is deeply personal and frightening. Birthright is giving us the tools and the incredible support system of our group to turn inward and delve deep.
