Someone once told me that history is what we had for breakfast, and anything older than that is just ancient. Well, I’m here to tell you that history matters, and there’s no way to prove it better than to relive it through the words and stories of the people who made it happen.
You probably weren’t alive when JFK was assassinated, but if you ask anyone over the age of 55 where he or she was on that fateful 1963 day, they’re almost sure to be able to tell you. Ask any Israeli where they were when they heard that Yitzhak Rabin had been shot, in November 1995, and they’ll tell you. In precise detail.
As for you, dear reader: Where were you when you heard about the September 11 attacks? See? You remember, because it was a moment in which the world changed.
The same holds true for November 29, 1947, the day the United Nations voted to partition Palestine into two states. The plan was for a Jewish state and an Arab state, linked by an economic union. Why that never happened is another story, but the UN vote to create a Jewish state was a game-changing decision, and the people who made it happen finally are having their say.
In this video, released just in time for the 63rd anniversary of the vote, key players in the drama leading up to the victorious moment share their stories, and prove that history matters. Created by Toldot Yisrael and The iCenter, “The Story of a Vote” makes you understand that we can’t take anything about Israel for granted. People took matters into their own hands, and the rest, as they say, is history.

When Suzy Eban teared up as she was saying that Jews now had a state, I had tears in my eyes, too. I wasn't alive in 1948 and in fact I didn't even know anything about Israel until I was in my teens. But the story is gripping and makes me feel proud to be part of the Jewish people.
