Final Day
Today was an unexpected perspective changing experience. We started off in the early morning towards Har Herzl which is a national Israeli military cemetery. We discussed the impact of army and war on the lives of Israelis. What was not anticipated was how emotionally moving the visit would be for the entire group. While walking through the cemetery there was a particular mother and father who was there visiting their sons grave. I watched as the mother carefully washed off the tombstone and watered the plants on his grave. Then we proceeded with our moments of remembrance, however, before we left the father asked if our group would say Caddish with him. We obliged with great honor, and it was at the moment that everyone felt the true connection to Israel and that these people are our people. The beautiful gardens and smells encouraged a solace place for remembrance of past loved ones. On our way leaving Har Herzl we witness the preparation of swearing in new soldiers.
Our next adventure was to Ben Yehuda Street where we were able to explore the shops and boutiques for gifts for our loved ones. We concluded our day with a visit to the Western Wall, were we were able to say a prayer and conclude our trip with some reflection.
Our closing discussion/activity was time to reflect as a group about our experiences. There was laughter and tears and many memories shared. Most of all we shared the idea of having a new found appreciation for our heritage and Israel. We can’t be tourists in our homeland.
