Day 5 - Jerusalem | Shorashim - Israel with Israelis

Day 5 - Jerusalem

Our trip to Jerusalem was a journey filled with excitement and emotion. We began on the outskirts of the Old City eager to explore deeper into the holy and capital city of Israel. Finally we began walking through the spiritual center of the Jewish people, giving us a feeling unlike any other. The history of the streets and walls we walked through is almost incomprehensible. As for myself, being the first person in my family to visit Jerusalem, I was especially touched by my visit. We quickly learned Jerusalem is divided into four different quarters: the Jewish Quarter, the Christian Quarter, the Muslim Quarter, and the Armenian Quarter. I found the time spent viewing the Dome of the Rock quite moving considering all of the history stemming from the landmark. Significant to the Jews, Christians, and Muslims in different ways, the Dome of the Rock is truly a universal place that everyone can share -- a rare thing.
Of course the visit to the Western Wall was my favorite part of the trip thus far -- something I believe many other of my fellow companions would agree on. When I first entered the ambiance in front of the wall, I felt part of something so big it is impossible to explain. I proceeded to bind a Tefillin around my arm and head, recited a few prayers, and walked towards the wall. As I put my note into the wall and placed my head against the stone, I felt at ease with everything. Completely relaxed and isolated from the world, I made my wishes and thoughts, and slowly backed away from the wall.
I will always remember my visit to Jerusalem as well as the people who I shared the experience with. In the future, I hope my children will be fortunate enough to enjoy the same experience I had.
