The beginning of our Israeli adventure got off to an interesting start with a 10 hour plane ride like none other. From the moment we stepped on the plane, we were bombarded with the sounds and sights of elements of Israeli culture. The energy that the estimated 100 children (16 of whom were infants) radiated was undeniable. Watching mothers chase their children down the aisles and observing the Orthodox men as they their tefilin and talis, positioning themselves to face East, almost destracted from the fact that it was nearly imposible to sleep. Delerious but extremely excited, we made our way through security and were greeted by our group of Israeli peers, singing and dancing... Our second day began bright and early with a trip to the Old City of Jerusalem. Though we were facing 100 degree temperatures, the Jewish Quarter was stunning. I waS amazed by obvious ancient qualities of the city. Growing up in Seattle, the oldest buidings I generally see are at most 170 years old. Being in such an ancient place, made my head spin-- thinking of all people who have made pilgrimages to these sites and cherished those meaningful experiences. It was amazing just walk the streets, run my hands against the worn stone of the Western Wall, and be in the presence of such old and holy sites. Our visit to the Old City was an exiting and poignant way to begin our first full day in Israel. --Katy Loeb
