Teacher Trekkers Arrive in Israel!

Shalom from Kibbutz Afik in Israel!!

Today has been a very exciting one (or was it two days rolled into one?) for participants and staff of Bus 151 -- Teacher Trek!

Our group of American educators boarded an El Al flight in New York on Monday afternoon and arrived in Tel Aviv early Monday morning. We were greeted with singing and dancing by our Israeli participants and staff. We finally boarded our bus as a complete group!

We had an opening ceremony commemorating our arrival in Israel while also taking a look back at the struggles Jews faced in reaching Israel in the past. We dipped our legs in the Mediterranean Sea, and moved onward to Kibbutz Afik, a lush and floral kibbutz in The Golan Heights.

Conversations on the bus between Teacher Trekkers have been inspiring. Already, there has been discussion of creating meaningful classroom materials, how to teach Jewish content in an authentic and relatable way, and methods for engaging students in Hebrew and Jewish history. And we just got here!

After arriving in the Golan, we had an orientation to our program and then hiked down Mount Arbel while enjoying breathtaking views of the Kineret. We learned about the geography of Israel and discussed the history behind the Roman caves in the side of the mountain.

We returned to the kibbutz for a quick swim, dinner and some "get to know you" activities. Now we are getting some much needed rest.
