Next year, in Jerusalem! | Shorashim - Israel with Israelis

Next year, in Jerusalem!

We woke up to a beautiful morning in the holy city. We spent the morning touring Old Jerusalem. Our first stop was a breathtaking outlook on Mount Scopus. After hearing the background of the city, and taking in the view, it only took a couple extra minutes to drag the girls away from their photoshoot. Then it was back on the bus for the most anticipated destination of our trip.

As we entered the old city, Lior reminded us of what we say each passover, "Next year, in Jerusalem." It was incredible to think we didn't need to wait until next year but just until the next stop.

After passing through bustling streets and unique shops, we arrived at the Western Wall. We drafted our own special notes, and donned our kippot and long skirts, made our way towards one of the most signifcant landmarks in Jewish history. Our feeling upon seeing the wall for the first time is something we will always carry with us. The Wall reminded us how we are just a small part of the rich, and powerful culture of Judaism. Each man and woman was able to make his or her special connection to the wall and to Judaism. The men even had the opportunity to wrap tefillin. The generosity of other people at the Wall enhanced this visit for everyone.

A sharp transition from the tranquility of the Wall was our journey through the chaotic shuk (open air market). We all were given time to enjoy falafel and shwarma, and any other local goodies. Our favorite was the chocolate rugula from Marzapan Bakery. It was some of the best we've ever had. Sorry, Bubbie!

After some downtime and a much-needed shower, it was time to put on our Shabbos-best. As we made our way to the Kabbalat Shabbat service at a local conservatice synagogue, we could feel shabbat in the air as the once-packed streets of Jerusalem seemed deserted. We were welcomed into the temple by the beautiful voices of who we believe to be the next American Idols. The service was short and sweet, and there was a clear sense of community among the congregation. We enjoyed a great dinner, and were surprised to see more schnitzel and hummus... Not!

We walked back to the hotel and gathered in the lobby for an Oneg. After a long night of chatting and of course, eating, it was time to go to bed and rest up for the next day!
