My First Shabbat

Friday was my first Shabbat. Leading up to the service, I didn't know what to expect and was eager to take part in the festivities. Because it was my first time experiencing Shabbat, I was a bit anxious about my potential role and didn't want to appear as though I lacked investment in the tradition. As soon as I sat down though I knew I was in the right place and felt extremely welcomed by the group. Between the joyous singing, traditional practices and a laughter-filled dinner with my new friends, my first Shabbat was absolutely wonderful. While the service was enlightening, the aspect of Shabbat that I enjoyed the most was having the opportunity to converse with friends in a more personal environment. Although I'm fairly non-religious, I foresee myself practicing Shabbat when I return home. Too often I get so wrapped up in my daily life and the coming days that I fail to make time for reflection. Now though, as I reflect on my experience, I could not ask for a better first Shabbat.
