Birthright Israel Study Abroad, an immersive, two-week, educational experience, offers the opportunity to earn up to 3 college credits through coursework that’s integrated into your Birthright Israel itinerary. Israeli Multiculturalism takes you on a one-of-a-kind journey through authentic encounters with diverse facets of Israeli society, communities, & cultures.

This incredible Birthright Israel program combines the ultimate experience of our award-winning Birthright Israel classic trip with a world-renowned education from Hebrew University of Jerusalem.  Coursework is enriched through first-hand encounters, workshops, & conversations with host communities throughout Israel.

Throughout this innovative, study abroad program, run in partnership with Hinam - The Center For Social Tolerance, participants spend a full day with Israeli Arabs, a weekend with the Ultra-Orthodox community, a half-day experiencing life on settlements in the West Bank*, & half of a day with the LGBTQ+ community in Tel Aviv.  Participants also visit the Ethiopian, Bedouin, & border communities, where you will learn first-hand about their history, families, points of view, & day-to-day lives.

By asking thought provoking questions, listening to personal narratives, & experiencing home hospitality, participants create long-lasting connections with individuals., Participate in a Birthright Israel experience that goes beyond traditional tourism, & allows you to see Israel even more like a local, looking beyond assumptions & labels through this nuanced, dynamic view of life in

With each visit to a unique community, participants will be introduced to the people, subject-matter, stories, controversies, & other elements that inform the past, present, & future discourse surrounding the particular community, & Israeli society as a whole. After hearing from locals, students will continue their immersive journey through an innovative workshop that highlights each culture, personal stories, & daily life.

Eric Saranovitz is both an instructor and the Director of Summer Courses and Special Academic Programs at the Rothberg International School of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In addition to his interest in promoting international education, Eric's teaching and research interests lie in issues around national identity, globalization, public memory and the mass media, especially as they apply to Israeli culture and society 

Yaron Kanner is the CEO of Hinam Center, a non-political and non-sectoral organization that aims to promote tolerance and respect within the Israeli society through significant encounters between all its groups and tribes. faculty will focus on various groups & tribes, including - but not limited to -religious zionism, social settlements, the political left & right, Arab society & more. Working with the students, the faculty will explore the discourse at the heart of today’s pressing challenges, allowing participants to gain relevant insights into their own communities. Yaron’s past work with social change organizations include Executive Director of “Panim - the Association of Jewish renewal organizations in Israel" and Head of Department of Legal Affairs at Tebeka Association: protecting the rights of new immigrants from Ethiopia and promote their successful integration in the Israeli society.

Like any Birthright Israel experience, you will first need to apply & pay your $250 deposit. Applicants can use their Birthright Israel deposit towards the cost* of the program!

In order to participate in this experience, you must be eligible for Birthright Israel. If you have already participated in Birthright Israel, you are not eligible for this experience.

Through this incredible program, students have the opportunity to earn three college credits. Similar credit summer courses at leading Israeli universities average between $1,500-$2,000 and cost much more than $2000 at institutions in the United States. Fortunately, we are able to offer a competitive course rate, which includes the opportunity to participate in high-level excursions, gain academic accreditation, hear from university faculty and lecturers, and participate in field study days, all while spending four additional days in Israel.

This experience offers students the one-of-a-kind opportunity to experience Israel with Israelis through Shorashim’s award-winning itinerary while synthesizing this experience with visits to a variety of communities in Israel. By taking part in different workshops and hearing about different communities accomplishments, challenges, and stories, participants are able to learn about the multiculturalism of Israel first-hand. This program truly goes beyond the typical Birthright Israel experiences and offers a unique, immersive view of Israel like never before and directly connects with Shorashim’s mission and focus on authentic encounters between Israelis and Americans.

Each university has their own special policy for accepting credit transfers. Our best recommendation is to check with your respective school to see what their policies for transferring credits are, and be in touch with us if you or your university have further questions about how to transfer credits.

Upon returning from Birthright Israel, each student who participates in this program is responsible for being in touch with Hebrew University to obtain the needed materials for their home university to effectively transfer credit.

You must have at least a 3.0 GPA to apply for this program.

There are no tests during this course, but you will have to complete a group & individual case study that fits the program requirements in order to receive credit.

This program is a one-of-a-kind experience that allows you examine different narratives of Israel through truly unique encounters.
