Mount Arbel | Shorashim - Israel with Israelis

The first step onto the ancient lands of our great ancestors marked the official start of this pilgrimage what we will call home for the next 10 days. The faces of old and new friends fill the bustling airport as we are greeted and welcomed by our native family. The welcoming embrace , energy and high spirits act as the most fitting catalyst to this life changing journey we currently navigate through compiling the essence of knowledge, culture, and the true meaning of love amongst the beautiful human beings that make this earth the most unique place to live.

On top of Mount Arbel we all sang a nigun and learned some sign language from our resident ASL expert, Rachel Greenberg. Our hike down the mountain was challenging, but beautiful, with views of the Sea of Galilee and a Bedouin village.

"Hiking Mt. Arbel was one of the best expirences of my life. The views were unbelievable! I am so grateful for this opportunity."-Rachel Shaykin

We drove to the top of the mountain and hiked out to the edge for the most beautiful view of several Israeli villages and other scenery. We took a different way around and climbed down part of the mountain face where many of us faced our fear of heights.

We end the day in the hot springs, feeling truly like one of the locals. In the warm water we relax, sharing stories that make us laugh.

Being with these people, not only the Americans, but the Israelis (especially the Israelis) has really REALLY opened my mind and eyes to what it's like to live in this country as a Jew, as well as what it could be like to live at home as a Jew.

In the afternoon, we explored Tzfat, one of the four holy cities in Israel. In the "old city," which is made entirely of stone, we saw art galleries, jewelry shops and ancient synagogues. One famous Kabbalistic artist, Avraham Lowenthal, held a discussion for us in his studio about art and spirituality

We at some tasty falafel and shawarma, visited a synagogue, and explored Tzfat's vibrant art community with an impressive glass-blowing demonstration.
