Bedouin Tent/Peter Shakshuka
After having a really fun concert/dance party with a bunch of other Taglit-Birthright groups, we finally arrived at the Bedouin tents in the Negev desert. We started the night off right with a delicious traditional Bedouin dinner. The meal was served on large trays to groups of 6 seated on the floor. After dinner, we heard from Salim, a Bedouin man who taught us about his life, Bedouin culture, and polygamy, which was interesting. We were given mattress pads and sleeping bags, and we staked out a spot in the giant tent we were all to sleep in. Sitting around the camp fire, we sang some songs accompanied by a borrowed guitar and a makeshift drum. When it was time for bed, we were surprised by how cold it was-- aren't deserts supposed to be hot? We got a loud, hollering wake-up from the Israelis from our group. After breakfast we got ready for an awesome camel ride. Here comes the fun part; the two of us (Amanda and Karen) met our new friend, Peter Shakshuka! He looks different than most of our friends because he walks on all fours, has a hump, and makes weird noises. Yes, Peter is a camel. He's the most beautiful camel in the world. This is the song he sang to us, roughly translated from camel:
(to the tune of Copa Cabana)
My name s Peter, Peter Shakshuka
I've got buggies in my hair, but I'm sexy so you should stare
Peeeter. Peeeter Shakshukaaaa.\Groaning and sneezing are always my passion
At the Bedouin. Bedouin tents.
We hope you enjoyed that! Hi Mom and Dad!
Love,
Amanda and Karen
