Our First Shabbat | Shorashim - Israel with Israelis

Our First Shabbat

Adam Steigerwald

Our first Shabbat on the trip began with discussions based upon identity and Judaism. We looked at the torah portion in which Moses learns he is Jewish and kills an Egyptian slave master. We talked about what we believed were the most and least important aspects of judaism. These activities allowed us to make connections with each other and explore our individual Judaism.

During free time, a pick up soccer game showcased the groups' athletic prowess. Others sat down with our Israeli leader, Neta, to learn the history of kibbutzim followed by a stroll through kibbutz Moran. Highlights included meeting and talking to two kibbutz members, seeing a clubhouse and walking past pomegranate, lemon and clementine trees and wild rosemary and lavender bushes.

Shabbat ended with havdallah prayers and songs. Dinner had us exploring the nearby town, enjoying traditional and non traditional Israeli food. We capped the evening with an exciting game involving Britney Spears.
