Day 3 | Shorashim - Israel with Israelis

Day 3

Marlee Silverstein

Today was once again a beautiful day in Israel!

Once we packed up our belongings from the hotel in Tel Aviv, we set out to the famous Independence Hall. Before entering, we got a lovely overview on the history of Tel Aviv, specifically on the location where we were, Rothschild Blvd. The presentation at the museum included a short documentary on the history of Israel's independence followed by a detailed narrative from our lovely tour guide. We learned about Ben-Gurion's achievement of independence as well as the history of the hall itself, the home of Tel Aviv's first mayor, Meir Dizengoff.

The museum tour concluded and we boarded the bus to go explore a market and shop. A group of us stopped at candy store called Happy Pills. It was a very unique concept and definitely a sweet treat. We then walked over to the market where we observed the various venders with displays of clothing. jewelry, fruit, and halva. I was able to sample a piece of dried pineapple which was delicious. We shopped around and a bunch of us purchased hamsa necklaces, most of us matching. The necklace will definitely be an important memento from this experience.

Shortly after, we were dropped off at anew location to enjoy lunch. Following lunch, we all participated in a group activity involving a scavenger hunt regarding the history of Rabin Square. We learned about how detrimental the murder of Yitzhak Rabin was through our personal interviews with surrounding Israelis as well as the stories shared among the group. We all got a good sense of how traumatic the time was for the citizens of Israel and how the incident stained their memories. We then listened to our Israelis sing a beautiful song about peace.

After that, we had the wonderful opportunity to visit the Save a Child's Heart charity. I love the concept of it and how many lives this organization has saved and how many family's lives it has touched. It's truly incredible to know how many caring people there are in the world devoted to helping others. We had a chance to meet the children at the facility and to interact and play with them. It was very special to me to be able to hear about the amazing things this organization has achieved and how much more good it will do in the future.
