July 17th 8:15AM | Shorashim - Israel with Israelis

July 17th 8:15AM

Our second Shabbat of the trip was spent at the Kibbutz Almog, just north of the northern shore of the Dead Sea. The general gestalt of this Shabbat was s feeling of a much closer family. We all needed the day to rest after the long, arduous, sleep deprived, and most importantly, completely awesome week of travelling Israel. We spend Shabbat playing in the pool, sun bathing, and debating topics affecting Judaism and the state of Israel. The concepts of the Sabbath seemed much more meaningful to us after a week where we prayed at the Western Wall and watched the sunrise over the mountains of Jordan from the top of Masada. If our first Shabbat was time to recover from jetlag and get to know each other, this one was a time to reflect with our friends.
After our Havdallah, we headed to Jerusalem to Ben Yehuda street for a late dinner and shopping (there’s a very good chance that those of you reading this will be getting a souvenir from these shops). Our acceptance of the fleeting moments of this trip led most of us to continue our celebration with dancing early into the morning.
This morning we packed up and left our Kibbutz to head to Mount Herzl. This is our last morning together and we are all dragging our feet after a long night with our new good friends. No one wants to think about saying our goodbyes, so everyone is napping or chatting on this bus ride to Israel’s national cemetery. This will be our last time to hear our tour guide Shiri tell us to bring our “hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, water, and cameras” before we head to the Airport to go our different ways.
