Shalom
As our final day in Israel began, we all felt the bittersweet nature of the trip’s end. After another delicious breakfast, we headed to the military cemetery on Mount Herzl. We knew we were in for a very emotional experience when Yonatan began to tell stories of soldiers and outstanding individuals who sacrificed their lives for the state of Israel. Row after row, all of the graves were beautiful, but also looked exactly the same. This shocked the group, as American graves are tailored to each individual that has passed. When we approached the “new plot” area, we were overcome with emotions as the Israelis in our group shared their personal stories of those they knew that were buried at Mt. Herzel. During one story in particular, the entire group felt the pain of one of the Israelis we have all grown so close to over the past ten days. Yonatan expressed his own sadness when we arrived at the patch of grass reserved for future graves. We were all thinking of how many more soldiers, friends, and family members had to die to fight for all that Israel represents.
We transitioned from our experience at the cemetery to a celebration of modern day Israeli life in Jerusalem on Ben Yehuda street. The group shopped for souvenirs to bring home, while also spending the last few hours with new friends.
In order to bring our trip to a close, we sat in a circle shared some last words about the trip. Many commented on the amazing experience by sharing their favorite moments, as well as what they learned. I think I speak for everyone when I say that this trip has been truly life-changing. We learned, laughed, and loved in this beautiful country. We have so much more to learn and discover, especially in relation to our own religious identity. This is only the beginning for us and we are truly grateful for this gift.
