A True Mifgash Experience | Shorashim - Israel with Israelis

A True Mifgash Experience

By Sydney Rubinstein, Sara Siliznol, Madison Schott, and Julia Stern

On our fourth day in Israel, we woke up for our last breakfast at our kibbutz. It was our final day here after four full days so it was a sad goodbye, but we are excited for what is in store!

After a sleepy bus ride, we arrived at the beautiful city of Tel Aviv. To start our tour of the city, we participated in a very cool activity at Rabin Square. We discussed and learned about the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin and interviewed the locals about their feelings of the event and how it continuously affects Israel today. It was interesting to hear all the responses - both positive and negative.  Many of us found a strong relation to this event with our feelings for 9/11. It was fascinating to see the impact of this cultural event and be able to find the comparison between our own cultural experiences.

Following the activity, we were able to have lunch at a Shuk. Some of us ate falafel for the fourth time. :) After shopping around a little bit, we felt we had become quite good bargainers.

After lunch, the group split up into two groups. One group went to the a science center in Rehovot, while the others helped celebrate the birthday of some Holocaust survivors (see photos below!).

The science research facility was incredibly impressive and the work they are doing there is extremely important for the future of science.

The birthday party was truly heartwarming and we enjoyed singing and decorating cards for the survivors.

Our Birthright group had the honor of spending time with the families of our Israeli participants at their homes. Some sat down for meals with the families, while others got tours of the homes and received hand crafted gifts. It was an amazing afternoon that opened our eyes to the life of our new Israeli friends.

Sadly, we only had an hour with our welcoming and loving hosts before we headed to our hotel to get ready for a fun night out. It was a great day filled with learning and a night full of laughter.

Just another amazing day on Birthright Israel with Shorashim!! #bus181 #shorasim
